Where Care Blossoms...
SARANI, a Non-Governmental Organization, was started in 1973 in Kolkata. An organization mainly comprising of volunteers, SARANI has become a platform of philanthropists from several walks of life with welfare as its sole motive.
In 1973 visionary Dr. Krishna Pada Sarkar who strongly believed in giving “time, money or valuable assets” to help make the world a better place, inspired and gently nudged his daughter Smt. Dipa Maiti to establish NGO SARANI, a registered social organization. He was a doctor who began his professional carrier in British Indian Army during the 2nd world war, he was a philanthropist who always fell for underprivileged people. The organization was started with the blessings of Mother Teresa .With its base in Kolkata, SARANI over more than four decades has thus been able to bring smiles to many faces.
The organization has worked extensively for about five decades solely relying on members for self-funding to reach out to people of underprivileged sector through well-planned and comprehensive programs in health, education, women-empowerment, addiction rehabilitation, environmental sustainability as well as sustainability of the society. While doing so, the organization had faced many obstacles, but reached to its destination with joviality.

The Early Years
Sarani’s mission is to help person suffering from any kind of addiction, who are a great threat to not only their own families but also to the society where they belong. Helping people affected by drug addiction & alcoholism through setting up a state of the art Rehabilitation & Wellness Center has recently become Sarani’s new area of focus.
Acheivments :

In 1973 empowered with the Divine Blessings of Mother Teressa Sarani began its voyage by giving financial aid to 18 poor but meritorious students of Sister Nivedita School, Bani Bhavan Senior.

In 1974 and 1975 Sarani organized its ‘Self-help group by marketing the hand made products made by poor girls.

In 1976 Sarani again gave financial help to needy students of Nivedita School.

In 1978, 18 poor students of Medinipur district, West Bengal received Sarani’s stipend.

In 1980 Sarani donated in Kumar Arah Primary School of a remote Panskura village, Mednipur.

In 1982 Sarani gave a donation to Ranchi Nirmala Sishu Bhavan.

In 1986 Sarani financially helped some leprosy patients of Ranchi Cheshire Home.

Since 2003 Sarani began to spread awareness program for the benefit of school drop-out and drug –addict boys in different areas of Kolkata.

In 2005 Sarani organized its 1st free eye camp with active participation of St. Jhon Ambulance Brigade.

In 2006 was a glorious year when Sarani honored legendary Eye Specialist Dr. I.S Roy as its president. This year Sarani established its charitable medical unit ‘Krishna Lila Seva Pratisthan” with the benevolent service of Dr. Anila Dutta Gupta, Dr. Nupur Biswas and Dr. Anima Dutta Roy. This year Sarani held its 2nd free eye camp in collaboration with Dr. I.S. Roy’s, medical team.

In 2008 Sarani received donation from United Bank of India’s Mahila Samity. This year is significant to Sarani because of Dr. Anila Dutta Gupta (Ex-Head of Gynecologist, Kolkata Medical College) who joined as a President of Sarani. This year Sarani began its weekly charitable dispensary at Sarba Dhannia’ Mission (Kolkata).

In 2009 Sarani stood beside the destitute who were devastated at AYLA. Poor children received clothes from Sarani. One poor meritorious student received stipend in this year.

Since 2010 Sarani introduced an Annual Trophy in memory of its Path Finder Monidra kumar Maity. From 2010 Sarani began to offer special financial support to down trodden meritorious students in memory of its Founder Late Dr. Krishnapada Sarkar.This year Sarani donated Rs. 15,000/- to the needy students of Purba Sukutia Balika Vidyalaya of Panskura.

2011 Sarani extended its free medical service towards almost Six hundred patients of Slum areas.

During 2012 Sarani donated educational materials to Bidhannagar Vidyadhari Vidyalaya, and Bidhannagar Ananda Tirtha Vidyalaya. Financial Support of Rs.15, 000/- was given to 5 sudents of Panskura Raghunath Bari School, Free Medical Camps were held throughout the year.

In 2013 Sarani donated Rs. 30,000/- to an unprivileged 5 year old cancer patient of Soraj Gupta Cancer Hospital. Rs. 28,500/- was given to selected 8 needy students. Since this year Sarani began to help the poor girls of Pranab Kanya Ashram by giving Rs. 12,000/- annually.

In 2014, Rs. 40,000/- was given to 3 cancer patients of Saroj Gupta Cancer Hospital. Another Rs. 40,000/- was donated as educational stipend to poor but meritorious students. Different free medical camps were organized throughout the year.

The year 2015 Sarani has organized 12 free medical camps .This year Sarani offered Rs. 93,500/- as medical support to 10 cancer patients of S.G. Cancer Hospital and Netaji Subhash Bose Cancer Research Institute. In this year Rs. 55,000/- was given to 9 poor but brilliant students of different remote schools of West Bengal. Rs. 40,000/- was given to Bharat Sevashram. Pranab Kanya Ashram also received Rs. 12,000/- from Sarani.

In 2016 Sarani received 80-G certificate under (U/S 12 A) of Income Tax Dept. We donated Rs. 1,61,000/- to 17 under privileged meritorious students. Rs. 1,20,000/- was given for the treatment of 8 needy cancer patients. Rs. 30,000/- was donated to 3 Thalasemia and Hemophilia patients of Basanti (Sundarban). 26 free medical camps were organized in different slum areas.

In the 44th Annual day celebration on 2nd July 17, Sarani donated Rs. 3,10,000/- to 28 poor but meritorious Secondary and Higher Secondary Students. Rs. 20,000/- was given to 2 post graduate needy students to continue their Master Degree. Sarani gave medical support to 7 poor cancer patients by donating Rs. 1,00,000/- Sarani also gave financial support of Rs. 20,000/- to 3 critical patients of poor families. On September Sarani again contributed Rs. 20,000/- to 2 extraordinary brilliant students of under privileged class. Pranab Kanya also received Rs. 12,000/- for the whole year. Another cancer patient of Safdarjang Hospital received Rs. 25,000/- from Sarani 2015 to 2017.
Events Organised :
Like previous years on 30th June, 2018 Sarani observed its 45th Annual function at BD Auditorium (Salt Lake).
This year also Sarani reached out to meritorious Students, who are from financially compromised background. 12 students of proverty striken families who passed Madhyamik Exam this year with flying colours received total donation of Rs.l,12,000/- from Sarani. All of them are from village Schools. 19 students of destitute families who passed Higher Secondary Exam in this year with brilliant marks also obtained Sarani’s donation of Rs.l,82,000/- on that day. One student of Sidhu Kanu Birsha University of Purulia who comes from a very poor family, obtained 1st class marks in her 1st Semester of M.Sc. received a donation of Rs.10,000/- from Sarani. Total donation in educational sphere is Rs.3,04,000/-.
10 cancer children of destitute unfortunate families who were sent by Saroj Gupta Cancer Hospital of Thakurpukur and N.S.B. Cancern Hospital received the donation of Rs.l,20,000/- from Sarani. Another 5 selected cancer patients of Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, N.R.S. and Safdarjung were donated 35,000/- from Sarani. So, total donation for Cancer patients is Rs.1,55,000/-.
Therefore on this occasion of Sarani’s 45th Annual Programme the organization was fortunate to help deserving yet needy 47 individuals with a humble amount of Rs.4 lakhs 59 thousands.
In conclusion we like to thank all the members and patrons who generously donate & eagerly support Sarani’s Principle. We hope more broad hearted people will come by the side of Sarani to help underprivileged people.
Sarani was really honored when Famous elocutionists Sri Partha Ghosh and Sm. Gouri Ghosh were presented in this Annual day as our Chief Guests. Eminent Bengali Singer Sm. Haimonti Sukla also performed on that occasion.
2018:
(1) Our medical camp organized for the benefit of sex-workers of Sonagachi (Kolkata) on 24th December 2017.
(2) On 4th January 2018 a health Camp held at a slum area of Salt Lake, AJ Block. There medical help extended to poor children of maid servants and van-pullers of that area.
(3) On 7th, 13th, 14th and 27th of January’ 2018 another four medical camps organized in the interest of the destitute diseased people of Ahiritola, Basanti Colony, Muraripukur and Dum Dum Cant respectively.
